From the Editors

Over the last six months, the Board of Directors of the International Oral History Association (IOHA) and its Local Czech Committee have been busy organizing the Sixteenth International Conference of Oral History. The event will take place this year in July 2010, in Prague, The Czech Republic. By the time this bulletin is published, it will almost be time to open the conference. The preparatory work has not been easy. Great effort has been made to keep the costs to a minimum so that the participation fees can be maintained at an affordable rate. Consequently, each member of he organizing team has been doing the work of several people. As the editors of this bulletin, we would like to thank all who have made possible the upcoming international gathering.

The community of oral historians is very active. The Latin American Continent continues to provide an example of productive dynamism. Both Columbia and Venezuela are preparing individual oral history conferences that will give impulse to and strengthen the networks and relationships between historians and associations. In Venezuela we see the emergence of a new national association of oral history. In Argentina, comrades struggle to maintain places of work in oral history. Likewise, 2009 was witness to the Ninth National Meeting of Oral History in Argentina. This event drew attention to the consolidation of oral history at a continental level. In other corners of the world people are continuing to work and innovate with vibrancy. From these pages we send out our salutations, encouragement and solidarity.

A number of local oral history projects are making possible the recovery of memories of place and distinctive situations. Some are modest in expectation and others are truly ambitious. Prague will allow us to make direct contact with all of these initiatives and their authors. The editorial world, for its part, has also been active. Important books of interest have been published over the last six months, some of which are reviewed in this bulletin.

We are currently in the midst of putting the final touches on our upcoming conference in Prague on 7-11 July. This project has completely absorbed our colleagues Mirek, Pavel,  Hana P. y Hana Z at the Czech Oral History Association. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them and recognize their tremendous work in organizing this international conference. Indeed, more than 500 papers will be presented at 100 panels and more than 50 countries will be represented. Moreover, there will be master classes in both Spanish and English.

For the organization of this conference, we have sought out all assistance possible, despite the limitations imposed by the current economic crisis. Fortunately, donations have come from the Oral History Association (US), the Australian Oral History Association and the Oral History Association (UK) which have been put towards the  scholarship fund and have made possible the participation of a seminal groups of international researchers. To all these sponsors, as well as the IOHA members who have made donations, I  personally extend my gratitude for their generosity. Finally, I would like to thank everyone who have participated in the making this conference possible.

At the same time, as the IOHA president I am very pleased to have signed a partnerships agreement between the IOHA and the Cervantes Institute. This organization is a Spanish cultural institution with an important international impact given its large number of centres around the world. Currently, the Cervantes Institute is sponsoring our conference in Prague and will assist in translating and interpreting. The Cervantes Institute will continue working with the IOHA in future conferences, thanks in large part to the bilingual nature of the organization.

Finally, the IOHA website and particularly this bulletin have been and will continue to be an essential tool for maintaining interest in Oral History around the world and is one of the objectives that we strive for as an association. I hope to see you in Prague!
